Keto bacon-wrapped asparagus
Tender asparagus spears wrapped in streaky bacon, roasted until the bacon is crisp—simple, low-carb party food.
Everything you want from a keto canapé: glossy green asparagus wrapped in salty streaky bacon and roasted until the bacon crisps and the spears are tender. Fast, simple and dangerously moreish.
Make this for supper, a barbecue side or as an elegant starter — the recipe is forgiving, but a little attention to roll technique and cooking time makes the difference between soggy and sublime.
Ingredients
- 24 asparagus spears
- 8 streaky bacon rashers
- 15 ml olive oil
- 5 ml garlic powder
- 5 ml black pepper
- 5 ml sea salt
- 1 lemon — zest and a little juice to finish
- 30 g grated Parmesan — optional, for finishing
Equipment
- baking tray
- kitchen paper
- tongs
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 200°C fan/220°C conventional. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
Snap or trim the woody ends from the asparagus spears so all are roughly the same length. Pat dry with kitchen paper.
Grate the lemon zest into a small bowl, then add the olive oil, garlic powder, sea salt and black pepper; whisk to combine.
Toss the asparagus spears in the seasoned oil so they are lightly coated.
Make 8 bundles of 3 spears each. Wrap one streaky bacon rasher around each bundle, starting near the woody end and spiralling up. Place bundles seam-side down on the lined baking tray, leaving space between each.
Roast in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, turning once halfway through, until the bacon is cooked and the asparagus is tender.
If you prefer extra-crisp bacon, place the tray under a hot grill for 1–2 minutes — watch constantly as it will burn fast.
Transfer bundles to a serving plate. Squeeze a little lemon juice over them and scatter the grated Parmesan if using. Serve immediately.
Tips
- Choose asparagus spears similar in thickness so they cook evenly; very thick spears may need an extra 5 minutes.
- Wrap bacon seam-side down on the tray to keep bundles intact while roasting.
- Pat asparagus dry before seasoning — excess water prevents browning.
- If your bacon has sugar or cure that browns quickly, reduce oven time and finish under the grill for just 30–60 seconds.
- Make ahead: prepare bundles and refrigerate on the tray for up to 2 hours, then roast straight from the fridge (add 2–3 minutes cooking time).

FAQ
Can I use thin bacon or rashers with rind?
Yes. Thin bacon will crisp quicker so reduce oven time by 4–6 minutes. Remove any very thick rind before wrapping to avoid chewy patches.
How do I stop the bacon from unwrapping?
Overlap the bacon slightly as you wrap and place the bundle seam-side down on the tray. If needed, secure with a cocktail stick (remove before eating).
Can I make these in an air fryer?
Yes — cook at 180°C for 8–12 minutes depending on thickness, turning once. Don’t overcrowd the basket so air can circulate.
